How to Make Despicable Me Minion Twinkie Cakes

Months ago when the Despicable Me Movie Promos starting hitting the airways I was wondering what these things were. I thought to myself – Are they Little Pills, Robots?? – I had no idea. I also thought they looked like Twinkies. So when I started writing a Despicable Me Birthday Party Theme I decided to create the Minion Twinkies I had in my mind and share it with you Step by Step right here as I made them.

So if you are planning a Despicable Me Party you may want to give these Minion Twinkies a try. They do take a little time to make, but I think they came out really cute and the kids will definitely love them. – mine did.

So let me show you how you can make your Minion Twinkie Army.

Here is What I used to create my Minion Twinkie Cakes:

  • Twinkies of course
  • Vanilla Frosting
  • Blue Food Coloring
  • Smarties for Eyes – Only the White Ones
  • Sour Gummy Worms – Arms & Legs
  • Black Licorice Pieces
  • Decorator Icing in Black, White and Red

Here are all my Ingredients that will make up my Minion Twinkie Cakes

I started the process by preparing my Minion Arms and Legs. I had Sour Gummy Worms I found in the store, but only needed Yellow for Arms and Blue for the Legs. So being each of these worm were were two colors I had to cut them up. The arms (Yellow)  you want to cut a bit longer then the legs.  The Minions legs (blue) are shorter so they were cut smaller. I then set these aside for later.

Next step is to create your Blue Frosting which will be for the Minions Overalls. Just add in as many drops as you need to get your desired color. NOTE: Set a small amount not colored aside for some Frosting Glue you will need later.

Now lets Dress our Minions.  About 1/2 way up your Twinkie start adding frosting to the top. Then for the sides go down a bit so the top is frosted higher than the sides so it looks like Overalls.  The carefully add the Straps on the sides. Twinkies can be kinda sticky out of their packages so be careful of crumbs when frosting. You can always remove them from the wrappers and stick in the fridge a bit before frosting if you need to.

After you have dressed your Minions in their Overalls stick them in the fridge for awhile and let them harden up before moving on. I just makes things easier and less messy.

While you are waiting you can sort out your Smarties to find the White ones. Now let me tell you that there are not a lot of White Smarties in each roll – who knew? As you can see from my Not White Pile there was a lot of packs opened to get out 12 White Smarties. Oh well they are cheap enough and the Smarties were the perfect eyes for the Minions – so worth the sorting.

I then added on the White Smarties Eyes using some leftover White Frosting Glue to stick them on. Some Minions have Two Eyes and some only One.  So you can decided one how many you want to do of each, but definitely do some of both.

Next I took my Black Decorating Icing and using the Thin Tip I traced the White Smarties to form the Minions Goggles. Then I added the Band down the sides of the Twinkie. Next I made Two Buttons on the Overalls. I then added a Circle with a line inside to represent the Minions Symbol they have on their Overalls.

Now the fun part – creating their faces. I then added Dots for their eyes. Then I took some Black String Licorice, cut into small pieces and stuck in the top of the Twinkie for the Minions fun Hair. Now not all of them have hair and some have less – so have fun with it. Then I drew on a mouth which is my favorite part. You want to give them all different expressions. Some of my Minions has Tongues, some Smiles and others even had Teeth.

Next it is time to add the Arms, Legs and Feet. Now let me suggest here that you do this on the plate you will be serving them on – makes it easier and avoids them falling off moving them. Just take some of your left over white frosting and dip the end of the Yellow Gummy Arm and stick onto the side. Do the same for the Blue Gummy Legs using the leftover Blue Frosting. For the Feet I used Black Licorice that came in small rectangles – not sure what you would call them. You can also use regular Black Licorice Cut as well.  These were just placed at the bottom of the legs – you can add Frosting Glue if needed here too.

That is it !!! A Minion Twinkie is Born – just as I envisioned it. See how Easy that was? Now go on and create your Twinkie Minion Army – this Army of Minions is awfully SWEET.

Hi, We are having an open house on Sunday August 4. I am going to make the Minions to have for anyone who comes to see the house. Now a days you have to do whatever it takes to get people to remember your house. Your idea is so awesome. I am doing mine a little bit different. I am cutting my Twinkies in half, I am not making any legs; everything else I am making the way that you suggested. Thank you for sharing your creativity.
