I was so excited when I saw these, I never knew they even existed. I am a BIG Fan of BLING on anything – I love all things that have sparkle and when I came across these Edible Sugar Jewels and Gems I was amazed.

They look just like real Jewels, but they are made from sugar and you can eat them.  So imagine a Princess Birthday Cake, Tiara, Pirate Treasure Chest, Guitar – pretty much anything – now you can embellish that cake with real looking Jewels and Gems the kids can eat.   Did I mention they even sparkle? Yes they do!! Talk about a conversation starter.

They are available in all colors and shapes and there are even clear ones that look just like diamonds. Edible Sugar Diamonds

– WoW!!! These are also great for Wedding Cakes and boy do I wish years ago I knew these were possible – I would have ditched the Flowers on my cake and opted for BLING in a second.

So what are they made of? Pretty much Corn Syrup and Sugar. You can give them some extra luster by giving them a small spray of Vegetable Oil.

Fancy Flours offers a large variety of Edible Cake Jewels in various colors and  shapes. They also have a large selection of other great Edible Cake Decorations, but if you can also make these at home if you are feeling adventurous.

First you would need to purchase a Hard Candy Jewel Mold

like the one you see pictured to the left. I like this one because it features all the jewel shapes, but there are so many different ones available and it is just a matter of preference.

I found this Microwave Hard Candy Recipe on Moms on the Go that they used to create these Awesome Jewels themselves. So here it is:

Microwave Hard Candy
Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup light corn syrup
Food coloring, whatever color you want. Add a few drops orange oil, if desired (or any other flavoring oil)

Directions:
Lightly spray candy mold with cooking spray.
Thoroughly mix sugar and light corn syrup in a 4-cup microwave-safe glass measure. Cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on HIGH for 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Remove from the microwave and carefully remove plastic wrap. Quickly stir the sugar mixture and then cover with a NEW sheet of plastic wrap. Microwave on high for 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Remove from microwave, carefully remove plastic wrap and stir with a clean spoon. After boiling has ceased, stir in coloring and then flavoring.
Pour syrup quickly, but carefully onto prepared mold(s). Wait until cooled and they should pop out easily. You can repeat as often as desired. If you are only working with one mold and want to keep your extra syrup from setting up in the mixing bowl, place glass bowl in 300 degree oven while you are waiting to use it.

Have fun and if you want to send us some pictures of your Birthday Cake to share using this fun Edible BLING – We would love to share it here.
