Lets Go Under the Sea with a Mermaid Birthday Party Theme

Looking for Mermaid Party Ideas? The Mermaid Birthday Party that I am about to share with you will have you swimming with plenty of them. Boy do I wish I can take credit for this Party, but I cannot – this Mermaid Party was actually shared with me from Party Cakes and Cupcakes by Leora.

Leora was kind enough to share all the ideas she used to bring this Under the Sea Mermaid Party to life and I am so excited because it truly looked like one AMAZING Party.  In addition to that a lot of the items she used to create this party are available to purchase from her in a printable PDF Format so you can recreate it too!!!

Now Leora resides in Australia so when she sent me the Mermaid Party Information I giggled only because some of the words they use for things are different from ours here is the US.  The weirdest thing is that as I read it the voice in my head had an Australian Accent and I kinda liked it – lol.

Leora Said: I was asked to plan a mermaid themed birthday party for a friend’s daughter Alex, who was turning seven. I wanted to do something a little bit different from the usual Disney Little Mermaid so I looked around for some cute mermaid graphics and I found some cute ones designed by Katie Castillo. I used these to design the invitation, placemats, lollybag (Favor) tags, banner, hanging decorations and thank you card. I designed the birthday party invitation first and then used that color scheme for the other party decorations (blue, green and pink with some yellow).

The room was also decorated with mermaid wall stickers and blue sheer material draped across the window. The helium balloons in matching colors really added to the atmosphere too! The banners were made from a single letter each printed on a separate page, laminated and then ribbon threaded through which looked great when hanging up!  I also put a flower lei on the back of each chair for the kids to wear.

The kids’ tables looked great all set up with the placemats. I printed the personalized placements on photo paper and laminated them so that they could be wiped clean and reused. The kids took these home with them too, so it made for a cute extra party favor. I really liked the clear bubble pictures on them!  I also bought some really cute ocean themed tin buckets and used these as snack boxes.

This Mermaid Cake and cake decorations took me hours to make! It was a two tier white chocolate cake with strawberry white chocolate filling and covered in chocolate ganache and then fondant. The mermaid topper was made from fondant and was especially fiddly to make but everyone loved her!

I made the marshmallow pops by dipping them in white chocolate, covering them in blue sprinkles and attaching a cute little gummy fish. The sticks were musk sticks that I attached with melted chocolate. (Musk Sticks are popular in Australia – They are also called ‘musk sweets’ and ‘musk lollies’ – Not sure they are available in the US, but you can sub something else for this). I put these into a little bucket and used brown sugar to look like sand. The oyster shell biscuits were very easy to make. I used Tic Toc biscuits that come already iced on one side, so I simply turned one upside down and attached the two together with some moist sugar paste. The ‘pearl’ was also made from sugar paste. There was also a fish bowl filled with colorful gumballs, a blue bucket with rainbow lollipops in it and a tall vase with long marshmallow twists.

The ocean jelly was simply blue jelly (Jell-O) and I popped two jellybeans in which made some interesting color shades towards the bottom of the cup. I added a gummy fish too and left it all to set. The kids really loved these!  They also had hot food like party pies and mini hot dogs.

After they finished eating, the mermaid entertainer arrived and the kids were so excited! She had a beautiful costume on complete with a shimmering tail. She played games with the kids, told them stories, sang songs, did pass the parcel and helped them to draw a mural. While this was happening I set up the tables with all the things ready for the cupcake decorating!

The kids then had a ball decorating 4 cupcakes each and they got to take them home in a special display Cupcake Box that they had decorated with stickers and glitter glue at the start of the party. Once the kids were finished, a lot of the grown ups decided they wanted to get in on the cupcake decorating action too and they decorated the extra cupcakes that I had made. They had so much fun too!

The clear lolly (Favor) bags were filled with pink and white marshmallows, gold coins and some other colorful lollies. I attached the matching personalized lolly bag tags and they looked so cute on the table. Everyone had a great time and they were so happy to take all their goodies home with them. I received a lot of compliments about everything I put together for the party and most importantly the birthday girl was thrilled with it all!

Was that Mermaid Party Amazing or What? I have to give a BIG Shout Out Thank You to Leora for sharing all the Mermaid Party Details with us.

Marshmallow pops are so original – I would never guess they are a made-at-home treat. I don’t know where you got such pretty gummy fish, but I will definitely steal the idea for our kids party, nice alternative to traditional lolly pops.
