Looking for a fun Winter Craft Idea? If so why not try your hand at making some Whimsical Paper Mache Snowmen – they are super EASY to create and adorable to look at.

These Whimsical Snowmen were created by me for my sister last year for Christmas. She loves all things Snowman related and I love to craft. Crafting is one of my other passions and I have decided to start showcasing them here on my blog. Actually before I really started getting into blogging I use to sell my crafts at a few local stores in my area.

I have neglected my Giant Craft Room for awhile and I am working on getting back to crafting and painting this year – my New Years Resolution of sorts I guess.  So stay tuned for lots of fun things I will be sharing coming in the new year.

Anyways I wanted to share these Whimsical Snowmen because they are really simple to make and look great hanging out on your shelf or a fun gift to give to someone like I did. Oh and have I mentioned they are Budget Friendly as well? Yup they are – BONUS !!

So here is all I used to create these COOL Snowmen:

  • Styrofoam Balls – One a bit smaller than the other and size will depend on how big you want them to be.
  • Twigs from your yard for Arms and Legs (cost = FREE)
  • White Spray Paint
  • Colored Paints for Mittens & Black Paint for Shoes
  • Orange Clay Noses
  • Assorted Buttons
  • Scrap Material for Hat & Scarf
  • Pom Poms for Ear Muffs and Wire or Pipe Cleaner for Ear Muff Band
  • Blush and a Q-Tip
  • Hot Glue
  • Shredded Newspaper
  • Paper Mache Goo – Recipe can be found HERE
  • Clear Finishing Spray

So first what you do is glue your Styrofoam Balls together, then stick in Twig Arms and Legs and add a little glue around them to help secure them in. Have fun with how you position them – I had one that sat down and one that stood up. Now the one that stood did not stand on his own – he had to lean on something which is ok especially if on a shelf.

Once you have that done start mixing up your Paper Mache and have your Shredded Newspaper handy. Then start covering your Snowman bodies with the newspaper – do about 3 layers. At the ends of the Twig Arms fold some of the paper to create the look of Mittens. Then on the Twig Legs layer the newspaper on to create shoes. They do not need to be perfect !! Also note I did not cover the Twig arms with the newspaper – I just added a layer of Paper Mache Goo on them for some texture.

When you are done with that part they must dry completely before painting them. I sat mine in front of my fireplace to help the process along because of course I started making these a day before Christmas – yup that is how I roll – last minute all the time – lol.

Next Step is the Spray Painting – Spray Paint your Snowmen White and let that dry.

Now the fun in bringing them to life begins !!! Paint on your face – add a Carrot Nose – you can make it our of clay or you may be able to find some in the craft store. I also took some of my blush and a Q-Tip to give them some Rosy Cheeks.

After I added those items I gave it a spray with Clear Finishing Spray to seal it all.

Next glue on some buttons, create a Hat & Scarf for one and some warm Ear Muffs for the other. To connect my Poms Poms I used some Wire and bent it into a Coil. You can also do the same thing using some Pipe Cleaners. Have fun with this part – you can get very creative !!

Now how cute are they? Ironic that I had these Snowmen sitting in front of the fire huh? Come on they were cold – lol

So what do you think – are you gonna make some?

Enjoy !!!
