I am very excited for this new animated movie How to Train your Dragon from the same creators of other great movies like Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda. I have a good feeling this movie will have a lot of the boys wanting a How to Train your Dragon Birthday Party Theme. I am going to give you some ideas on how to pull that off right here.
The story is set in a Mythical World full of Vikings and Wild Dragons and the teenage viking boy Hiccup does not fit in with the other heroic dragon slayers. Until the one day he encounters a Dragon who helps them see their world in a whole new light. He befriends what is suppose to be his vicious enemy his life changes and becomes complicated as he starts to live a double life. Is that exciting or what?
First I am going to start with the How to Train your Dragon Party Supplies you see pictured above. They come available in a party pack that includes: 8 invitations, dinner plates, cups, forks, spoons, activity placemats, 16 napkins, How to Train Your Dragon tablecover, prismatic star mylar balloon, 18 balloons (3 colors), crepe paper rolls (3 colors), curling ribbon (3 colors), star confetti and cake candles. Or you also have the option of purchasing the items separate and mixing in some solid colors.
If you want to change up your invitations EBay has a lot of great How to Train your Dragon Invitations
available in many style choices. Of course being it is a party based on a movie than you may want to consider the How to Train a Dragon Ticket Style Invitations or even the VIP Pass Style which are also both available on EBay. Remember they can be personalized with all your party information and in some cases even your child’s photo. The How to Train a Dragon Ticket Style Invitation you see pictured to your left is from EBay seller Eventwrapper and happens to be a favorite of mine. If you look closely you will see a photo of the birthday child on the front wearing a viking hat right next to Hiccup. How cool is that? All you do is send a photo of your child and they will add them right on to the invite. Your guests will be WoWed for sure. You also have the option to print from home or have them mailed – so no need to worry if you are a last minute party planner.
Another item that is a must have at this party are the Viking Hats
– even if you are taking the kids to the movies How funny would it be to have all your party guests walking in with a Viking Hat on their heads? They are cardboard hats have the elastic and fun Viking Horns that stick out above. They also make an extra treat for the kids goodie bags to bring home. Make sure to get a picture of all the party guests together with these on.
Here are a few Party Games ideas you can do:
Train your Dragons – Play this game as you would Simon Says – just that the leader will be a Viking (wear your hat) and all the guests at this point will be dragons. See which Dragon (Guest) is the last one standing and will become your most Trainable Dragon.
Deadly Nadders Strike Zone – Played off of the game on the movies website. When training your Dragon it is important to always be on guard and be able to dodge their moves quicker than them. So for this have one guest be the Dragon and the other a Viking. Have them stand facing each other so when their arms are out they can just about touch. They have to keep their feet from moving, but can move side to side and bend forward and backwards only. Then the face off begins. The dragon must try and touch the Viking and the Viking must try to dodge being touched. Set a timer for about 1 minute – If the Viking can dodge the Dragon for that amount of time they win, if they get touched before they lose.
Mastering your Shield – The most important piece of equipment a Viking has is their shield. So why not test your Viking to make sure they have the skills to use it. Now here is where a fun craft comes into play. Let the kids Make a Viking Shield. You can do this by simply taking Cardboard or Heavy Poster Board (not thin type) and cutting out large circles maybe about 24″+ round. Let the kids have fun decorating them with crayons. markers, stickers etc… Then on the back attach a handles so they can hold it and make sure it is secure – use duct tape or Glue Gun to secure it. You can also create Swords as well using the Cardboard and cover it with Tin Foil to give it the look of metal. In the movie How to Train a Dragon the Vikings are always having to fight off being hit by the Dragons Tails and the fire they breathe so lets see if your Vikings can master their shields. For this I would take some Light weight balls like maybe Ping Pong Balls or Tin Foil Balls and line up your Viking while they are holding their shields. Then on go throw a ball at one or two of them without them knowing who it will be and see if they can protect themselves from being hit using their shield. If they get hit then they are out and so on. This game is one they will want to play over and over – so be prepared!!!
Dragon Tail Game – This is a fun game that all the kids play as they try to catch their tail – you will need lots of run for this one. What you do is have all the kids line up and create two teams. Then have them hold on to each others waist all connected in a big line. The last child at the back will have a Dragon Tail – you can use a Bandanna or any piece of material and stick it in the back pocket of the last child in line. On go the child first in line has to try to get the Dragon’s tail while they all stay holding on to each other. The first team to capture their Dragon’s Tail wins and then the players switch places and go again until everyone has a turn.
Catch the Dragon – For this game I came across these very cool Inflatable Dragons you can use as the game prop and they also become a fun bonus gift for the Birthday Child after the party. These Green Dragons are 30″ Tall and are the perfect size to throw a Hula Hoop over. They are even cheap enough to get one for each guest and use as a party favor. For the game just stand one up and have the kids stand and a set distance and see who can Catch their Dragon by throwing the Hula Hoop around it.
I also have to share this 4 Foot Inflatable Dragon
. What a perfect prop for this party theme or you can use this big guy for your games. Imagine the kids faces to see this huge Dragon upon entering your home for the party.
Now you cannot forget a Pinata at your party and what would be better than a Dragon Pinata? Nothing. Now there are many Dragon Pinatas out there but I happened to like this design the best. This guy is 7″W x 18″L x 19″H and I just think his looks and coloring works for this party theme. To order him just Click HERE.
Another fun party activity is to let the kids Stuff a Dragon. It is just like Build a Bear, but in the comfort of your home. This activity also doubles as your party favor. Each Stuffable Dragon Kits comes with 16″ Plush Dragon, Stuffing, Wishing Star Insert, Custom Birth Certificate and directions. So you little Viking Guests can go home with one well trained Dragon they will love.
Now for your How to Train your Dragon Birthday Cake you have many options and here are a couple of them. One is you can purchase one of the many How to Train Your Dragon Edible Cake Images available on EBay. They can also be personalized with your child’s name on them as well. The one you see pictured to your right is from EBay seller: cakesforcures2003.
If you are feeling creative you can create this Fire Breathing Dragon Cake that is very easy to make. Lucky for you you can find Step by Step Directions with photos over at Instructables. Of course you can make him any color you want him to be and I think it is one fun cake that the kids will absolutely love. It is not at all as hard to make as it may look and with the directions even easier. You can also see a page I created that features a lot of great Easy Dragon Birthday Cake Ideas Here: Dragon Birthday Cakes.
So now lets talk about your How to Train Your Dragon Party Favors. Of course if you have used any of the items above they will double as party favors so keep that in mind so you can stay within your budget. You can of course get the How To Train Your Dragon Party Favor Box
that matches the party supplies and includes: Stone Castle-shaped favor box includes a How To Train Your Dragon Sticker Sheet, a How To Train Your Dragon Flying Disc, a glow necklace, a foam dragon mask, a mini gold trophy and 4 Zotz® candies. Or you can go on your own.
I am a big fan of kids reading and there are a lot of How to Train Your Dragon Books
available and giving one of these as a party favor is a perfect gift I think. I think the Gobber’s Guide to Battling Dragons is a great choice, but there are many other titles to choose from and they are all BUDGET FRIENDLY.

Thanks so much – if you need any help let me know.
Can you suggest fun food to serve? Not the typical party food, but something fun to go along with the theme. Thanks!
Great post! I’ve shared a link to your How to Train Your Dragon pages on my page dedicated to the movie.
The large red inflatable dragons are amazing but sadly discontinued. If anyone has some still and wants to sell them, please contact me ([email protected]/* */). My son just got into dragons and I can only find small inflatables… trying to find large ones for his party. Of course Oriental Trading Company shared they bought them in China and the supplier would sell me 1,000 of them but ha – don’t think I will be selling 990 to make it worth my while 🙂
