We are getting very close to Back to School time as I write this and a fun way to get the kids excited is by baking them a cake and having a Back to School Party. I created this School Bus Cake 7 years ago when my son and nephew were going to start Kindergarten and now they are both in Middle School – where  does the time go?

I had seen this School Bus Cake back then on parents.com and decided it was the perfect cake to make for the occasion.  It is so easy to create and I will tell you how I did it – yes I actually remember even though it was 7 years ago.

Here is what I used to Make this School Bus Cake:

  • 2 Boxes of Cake Mix – I used Chocolate
  • 9″ x 13″ Pan
  • White or Vanilla Frosting
  • Yellow Food Coloring
  • 4 Red M&Ms
  • 2 White Mentos
  • 2 Hershey Bars
  • 2 Mini Chocolate Donuts
  • Black & Red Writing Gel
  • 2 Nilla Wafer Cookies

Bake your Cake in the 9″ x 13″ Cake Pan. Cover a piece of Cardboard with foil or have a nice base for your School Bus Cake. When the Cake is cool flip it over onto your base. Then cut off about a 4″ portion of your cake and then trim about 1″ or so from each side to create your Hood. Set aside Hood. Mix up all but a small portion of your Frosting with some yellow food coloring to get your desired Bus color.

Then using your Yellow Frosting Frost the large part of your cake. Then place on your hood so the the bottom of it is equal to the bottom of the other cake. Frost with the rest of your Yellow Frosting. Then take some of the left over White Frosting and frost a Rectangle above the hood for your Bus Windows.

Next using your Black Writing Gel outline the Window and add a line down the center. Then outline the rest of the cake as show in the photo using the same Black Writing Gel. On the top of the Bus Cake I filled in 2 rectangles using the Black Writing Gel and then added 2 Red M&M’s on each side to look like lights. Then in the Middle I wrote “School Bus”.

Stick on 2 Nilla Wafers in the Windows and add on some hair with the Black Writing Gel and two dots for eyes. Then with the Red Writing Gel draw on a Smile. Now take your Chocolate Donuts and add one to each side of the Hood.

On the Hood I took Hershey Bars I broke into pieces and created 2 Squares which I then added on a Mentos to each one using some of the extra white frosting as glue to be the Headlights. The rest of the Hershey Bar I broke up into to longer pieces to create the Buses Grill. (Black Licorice would work well for this too).

And there you have it a yummy School Bus Cake that will hopefully get the kids excited for school. Add some Candles and let them make some School Wishes.

My Sister in Law brought over some fun Traffic Light Brownies to the Back to School Party. These were so cute and complimented the School Bus Cake perfectly. All she did was bake some Brownies and frost them with Yellow Frosting.  Then to each Brownie you add on a Red, Yellow and Green M&M.

When they are cut they become Edible Traffic Lights – Fun Fun Fun.

How Easy is that? Not only are they cute, but they are quite yummy too.

So ease the anxiety of Staring School or Going Back to School by making the kids a cake and throwing them a Back to School Party.

If you have a Back to School Cake you have made and want to share let me know  – I would love to share it with my readers to see !!!
